IDA, International Documentary Association, has created a community of the world’s best documentary makers that are ushering in a “golden age” of archival footage use in production, looking to researchers to make a deep dive into archives for the best and most unique footage, and pushing for more flexible clearance deals. This panel will explore how documentary artists are producing their projects, working with archives, finding footage, and getting footage cleared now.

Kicking Down the Walls at FootageBank

t FootageBank, 2018 has been a year full of blueprints, contractors, demolition, and construction. No, FootageBank hasn’t moved again – it’s been building a handcrafted e-commerce site. Like constructing an invisible house, creating an e-commerce site has meant tearing down the current site’s load-bearing walls to watch ceilings collapse. It has meant selecting hardware to match finishes that don’t look like the samples. New plumbing, new wiring, new roof, and a new experience – a massive project for a tiny team, led by Carol Martin. But the dust will settle, FootageBank’s e-commerce site will open next month, and it will be a beauty! 

Revisit the Great Recession of 2008 at NBC News Archives

It has been ten years since the beginning of the Great Recession. The cataclysmic event started in the United States, with the crash of the subprime mortgage bubble in 2007. Other factors, such as predatory lending, fraudulent underwriting practices, and excessive risk-taking by financial institutions, increased the debt and eventually escalated into a full-blown banking crisis.

In the United States leading up to the crash, high mortgage approvals and low interest rates triggered a spike in home purchases. This drove up housing prices, which led to large numbers of homeowners borrowing against their homes as an apparent windfall. Unfortunately, many homeowners were unable to pay back their loans, and high delinquency rates led to the rapid plummet and devaluation of financial assets. The banks that had invested in the loans were facing a major liquidity crisis. In other words, the bubble had burst.

On September 15, 2008, the investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. By the next day, at least seven other major financial institutions were all expected to follow suit. To prevent this outcome, and a possible collapse of the world financial system, the US federal government paid several trillion dollars to bail out the banks. Despite the bailout, the crisis was followed by a global economic downturn: the Great Recession..

The Red Skelton Hour, a Treasure Trove of Pop & Rock Music Acts from 1962-1970, Available at Reelin' in the Years

For the past six years, Reelin’ In The Years Productions (RITY), the world’s largest music footage library, has been proud to exclusively represent for licensing all of the music footage from the classic television program The Red Skelton Hour, which aired on CBS from 1962 – 1970. This footage is unique in that the music performances haven’t been seen since the program was originally broadcast.

Red Skelton is widely considered to be one of the greatest entertainers of all time, and his television program, The Red Skelton Hour, is acknowledged as one of America’s finest TV variety shows. Throughout the program’s history, many of the top musical artists of the day appeared, including the Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, The Animals, The Kinks, The Fifth Dimension, Jan & Dean and Dionne Warwick. Reelin’ In The Years Productions brought its vast experience in the field of licensing to market the music footage from the show, re-transferring hours of master tapes and spending years meticulously cataloging this important library.

The Red Skelton Hour archive contains a “who’s who” of notable guests including some of the greatest musical icons of the era. The Rolling Stones made one of their earliest national TV appearances on the program  — two months before their first time on The Ed Sullivan Show — performing three songs including their first American single, “Tell Me.” The Beach Boys appeared twice on the show: once in 1963 (their second time ever on national TV, and with original member David Marks still in the band) and, again, in 1964 performing “In My Room” and “I Get Around.” Other gems in the archive include Three Dog Night performing their smash hit “Easy To Be Hard,” The Four Seasons singing their #1 hit “Sherry,” three appearances by Johnny Rivers including renditions of “Secret Agent Man,” “Memphis,” and his chart-topping hit “Poor Side Of Town” and The Association performing their #1 hit “Windy.” Possibly the rarest musical guest on the show was Iron Butterfly, who performed their classic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.”

One of the greatest strengths of The Red Skelton Hour archive is the exceptional collection of “British Invasion” performances; virtually every major UK act, save the Beatles, appeared on the program. In addition to The Rolling Stones, other artists include The Kinks, The Animals, The Hollies, Manfred Mann, The Searchers, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, Dusty Springfield, Peter & Gordon, The Honeycombs, Chad & Jeremy, and Freddie & The Dreamers.

AMCUP & FOCAL to Host FootageFest 18 in LA

This Fall, AMCUP will premiere FootageFest ’18.  Partnering in AMCUP’s inaugural event is its new transatlantic partner, The Federation of Commercial Audio-Visual Licensors (FOCAL International), who is coming to the newly-revitalized NoHo Arts District in the Heart of the City of Angels. 

The two-day festival will take place on September 22-23, 2018 at multiple locations in North Hollywood.

Whether you represent stock libraries, production companies, news agencies, viral videos or independent cameramen – you probably spend way too much time travelling to conventions with the promises of being connected to buyers….

And whether you are a researcher, clearance professional, archive producer, writer or director, you probably spend way too much time trying to find those unique pieces of footage that you haven’t been able to find at the larger corporate libraries – the clip that’s going to bring gold to your project.

ACSIL and Thriving Archives Launch New Footage Industry Survey

ACSIL and Thriving Archives today announced the launch of the ACSIL Global Survey of Stock Footage Companies 4 (AGS4), their fourth survey of the global footage business. The 47-question survey is being conducted online, and all footage companies worldwide are invited to participate.

The online survey is open now through August 13, 2018, and can be accessed here.

ACSIL and Thriving Archives have worked together to publish three previous AGS reports – the first in 2007, the second in 2011 and the third in 2015 -- achieving strong industry support and participation in each effort. Since publication, all three AGS reports have been widely used and highly valued by business leaders both inside and outside the footage industry.

Like it’s predecessors, the AGS4 is designed to take a snapshot of the global stock footage industry, track evolving trends and examine how footage companies operate, market and serve their customers, providing footage industry leaders with strategic, practical information to help them compete more effectively.

“As the news, marketing and entertainment sectors become defined by their video content, the footage industry experiences enormous growth and rapid change,” said Matthew White, Executive Director of ACSIL. “This fourth survey of industry trends and activities will provide a long anticipated snapshot of the new dynamic in footage licensing. We expect to learn more about our businesses in this survey than in all the others combined.”

The AGS4 questionnaire has been fully updated to collect data on the current footage market, with a focus on the impact of digital media marketplaces and new customer types. The results of the online survey will be published before the end of the year.

“The footage industry has made massive strides since we published our first survey back in 2007,” said David Seevers, president of Thriving Archives and principal author of the AGS series. “Footage companies have been steadily digitizing and moving online, with many of the leading companies blazing a trail into ecommerce, and we’ve updated our survey to reflect these changes and capture these shifts.”

The waning years of 1960s were a time of great upheaval, and Global ImageWorks' has dug deep into their archive of photos and footage to capture the turbulent conclusion of a momentous decade.

Making Strides - 1968

1968 was a year of seismic social and political change. Vietnam became the first televised war; revolutions developed throughout Europe; and famine struck Africa. The Summer of Love turned sour and the world shifted. The United States reeled from the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, increasing civil rights protests and the rise of the Black Power Movement. The sci-fi series Star Trek broadcast America’s first televised interracial kiss between Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner, further pushing the racial boundaries that divided the nation. The year ended with notable strides that not only rocked the nation, but helped transform the world.

Making Change - 1969

In 1969 we saw great innovations and change. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became instant household names as the nation watched the astronauts take their first steps on the moon. In November, the largest anti-war protest in America took place in Washington, DC; The Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam. Simultaneously, engineers were making technological advancements. The invention of RFC processes changed the course of the internet’s future and how we communicate.

Making History - 1970 

Revolution and Rock n' Roll; 1970 was the beginning of a new era. The King himself, Elvis, visits President Nixon; Apollo 13 makes a safe landing on Earth; and four boys from Liverpool call it quits. Change was inevitable. The first Earth Day was established as our society began taking note of its environmental impact. Anti-litter campaigns were everywhere as citizens became more and more aware of the nation’s pollution.

Get Set for the 2018 FIFA World Cup with Clips from NBCUniversal Archives

The 21st FIFA World Cup starts on June 14 in Moscow, Russia. Thirty-two teams will play 64 games across 11 cities, each vying for the championship. The opening game will be played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, pitting Russia against Saudi Arabia. The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, following the success of the Olympic Football Tournament. Because the voyage from Europe to Uruguay was so long, only four European teams were able to attend the first tournament, France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and Romania. Uruguay triumphed, winning 4-2 against Argentina in the finals.

This year, favorites to win include Brazil (who has won five tournaments, more than any other team) and Germany, the defending champion. Iceland and Panama will be making their first Cup appearances. Missing from the roster will be a few big names—including Italy, Chile, and the United States—who didn't qualify.

To Celebrate 50 Years Of Thames, Fremantlemedia Archive Digitizes The Iconic Televison Catalogue

IDA Awards 2018 Submissions Period Now Open

The submissions period for the 34th annual IDA Awards is now open to any documentary, non-fiction or factual program completed and/or been broadcast or publicly released between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.

ABCNEWS VideoSource Award

Archival filmmakers should make sure to submit their work for the ABCNEWS VideoSource Award for the best use of news footage as an integral component in a documentary. The award includes a $5,000 cash honorarium and research time at the ABCNEWS VideoSource facility in New York.

"News footage" is defined here as factual footage, contemporary or historical, shot for use in context such as newsreels, news specials, magazines or nightly news. "Integral component" is defined here as footage that is central to the structure, meaning and impact of the work.

Entries in the Feature category are eligible for this award.

LA 92, a feature documentary about the 1992 Los Angeles riots, directed by Daniel Lindsay and T. J. Martin, won the ABC News VideoSource Award at the 2017 IDA Awards, held December 9, 2017. Consisting entirely of archival materials, "the film looks at the events of 1992 from a multitude of vantage points, bringing a fresh perspective to a pivotal moment that reverberates to this day."

British Pathé Signs Deal to Represent Reuters Historic Footage

British Pathé has signed a major deal to represent Reuters historic footage filmed before 1980. The agreement brings together two of the greatest newsreel collections in the world, more than doubling the content British Pathé has to offer, increasing the total number of film items to 208,000 and the date range covered to 1980. All the clips are available to view on www.britishpathe.com from today. 

Alastair White, Chief Executive of British Pathé, said: “It is extremely exciting to be uniting two of the world’s great archives by combining Reuters’ rich and prestigious collection prior to 1980 with our own. The depth and breadth offered by Pathé News and Reuters historical archive establishes British Pathé as the “go to” place for anyone looking to license historical video content.”

The deal encompasses complete, fully-digitised collections from early cinema newsreels from 1910 to 1959, including Gaumont Graphic, Empire News Bulletin, British Paramount, and Gaumont British, as well as Visnews content from 1957 to 1979. 

The newsreels, cinemagazines and documentaries feature highlights from the late-19th and 20th centuries such as the Titanic setting off from Belfast, the Russian Tsar and his family, the suffragettes in their battle for the vote, the evacuation of Dunkirk, the women workers in Britain’s factories during the wars, the coronation of Elizabeth II, decolonisation and independence on the continent of Africa, the Beatles taking the world by storm, Vietnam, Watergate, and Thatcher’s rise to power. 

In addition, quirky items look at the lives of ordinary and extraordinary individuals, with their eccentric inventions, cooking techniques, hairstyles, and innovative fashion designs. Travelogues chronicle the history, landscapes, and customs of foreign lands. 

Media professionals have access to free archive research and can download free low-resolution files for use as screeners. The original film reels for both collections are available for HD transfers. 

British Pathé have ensured that licensing from such a broad collection will be just as quick and easy as it always has been. Aside from having a wealth of new material from which to choose, the process for licensees will be exactly the same.

Reelin' in the Years Adds 2,000 Tapes from the Brian Linehan Archive

Reelin' in the Years President David Peck inspects the newly arrived Brian Linehan collection.

For over twenty-five years, beginning in 1973, Brian Linehan interviewed the most celebrated and influential stars and creative personalities in Hollywood. The programs he hosted, City Lights and Linehan, were broadcast across Canada and have not been seen since they first aired. In late 2015, Reelin’ in the Years Productions was honored to sign a deal to represent his archives. As with many collections, trying to get all the material in one place has not been easy and the team at Reelin’ in the Years had to dig through many different vaults in Canada to locate the master tapes as well as many of the raw camera tapes.

Five weeks ago they received over 2,000 tapes that had been sitting in a storage facility north of Toronto and were in danger of being destroyed, and have spent the last five weeks transferring and cataloging over 1,300 of the tapes. The tapes are on many different formats, from 2-Inch quad to 1-inch, Betacam and Umatic, which take a lot of care to ensure that they play correctly and to get the best transfer. Reelin’ in the Years was able to transfer all the material in their office except the 2-Inch quad tapes, which needed to be handled by David Crosthwait at DC Video.

“It’s such a joy to discover footage that has been lost for decades and to make them available for filmmakers for the first time,” said David Peck, president of Reelin’ in the Years. “One of the many unique items we uncovered was an interview with Donald Sutherland, John Landis and John Belushi promoting the movie Animal House in 1978. John Belushi rarely ever did interviews so this was a very special find.”

To date, RITY has transferred and cataloged thousands of interviews with actors, actresses and directors from not only the Brian Linehan Archive but David Frost, Merv Griffin, Rona Barrett, Fred Saxon and many others. If you are doing a doc on anyone related to Hollywood from the 1950s to the early 2000s chances are they have an interview with that person.

Footage Directory Set and Ready for Distribution at NAB 2018

With just under 170 listings from a wide range of leading footage companies, the first edition of our new Footage Directory is set and on-track for distribution at the upcoming NAB Show, which kicks off on April 9. Our goal was to create a useful introduction to the footage industry for creative professionals, and we're anticipating a very positive response from NAB attendees.

Our NAB exhibit will also feature a diverse group of promo partners, including ABCNEWS VideoSource, AP Archive, Bridgeman Images, FootageBank, Global ImageWorks, INA Mediapro, Reelin’ in the Years Productions and WPA Film Archive. It is a strong set of footage companies and highly representative of the quality and scope of footage collections available for search and discovery on Footage.net.

If you did not get a chance to list your footage company in this edition the Footage Directory, take heart. Based on user response, we will most likely expand the directory concept in the near future into a more comprehensive footage industry handbook. 1968 - 50 Years Later at NBCUniversal Archives

1968 was a year of progress, protests, untimely deaths, and new beginnings in the United States. Americans were literally soaring to new heights with the success of the Apollo 8 moon landing. On Christmas Eve, astronauts Jim Lovell, Bill Anders, and Frank Borman became the first human beings to travel to the moon, and the lunar surface was broadcasted on television for the first time. It was a rare joyous event during a year of so much tragedy.

In January, Americans had faced a deadly surprise attack by the North Vietnamese on over one hundred cities and outposts in South Vietnam, called the Tet Offensive. The event was a strategic victory for the North, and resulted in heavy casualties on all sides. News coverage of the violent Tet Offensive shocked the American people, and the conflict is seen as a turning point in the war, as enthusiasm and support back home began to diminish.

Later on, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, two of the nation’s most prominent leaders, were assassinated within months of one another. The death of Dr. King, the most prominent face of the Civil Rights movement, furthered the rift between black and white Americans and led to unrest in many U.S. cities. The death of RFK led to uncertainty among the Democratic Party. At the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a wave of violent protests between antiwar demonstrators and police forces took place. The disturbances were broadly publicized by the mass media, with some cameramen and reporters being caught up in the violence.

Celebrity Footage Wraps up their 25th Awards Season with Extensive Oscar Night Coverage

Oscar Sunday was a huge night for CelebrityFootage. They covered the exclusive Vanity Fair Oscar Party, the Elton John AIDS Foundation Party and the Academy Awards red carpet arrivals. 50 Years Ago - The Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. from NBCUniversal Archives

It was April 4, 1968 and Martin Luther King Jr. was in Memphis, Tennessee, to march with the city's striking sanitation workers. That evening, on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed.
 
King, born in Georgia in 1929, had spent more than a decade fighting for civil rights. He was instrumental in the success of the Montgomery bus boycott, the March on Washington, and the march from Selma to Montgomery. His work had been dangerous and grueling. King had almost died from a stab wound, his home had been bombed, and he had been jailed over twenty times though the years. Nevertheless he persisted, and in 1964, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1964 and 1965, he watched President Johnson sign the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts into law.
