FootageFest ’24 has released their list of exciting panels for its three-day soiree this September at the luxurious beach-side Marriott Marina Del Rey!
/In its sixth year, FootageFest has become the largest conference for third-party content in the world.
Headlining the panels will be its main event — the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding the controversial use of Artificial Intelligence in today’s film, TV, and online programming. Following a demo from graphic artist extraordinaire Seth Strong (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and legal updates by FF fave and legal eagle Jon Segal (partner, David Wright Tremaine), you’ll hear a guideline proposal from Florentine Films’ Stephanie Jenkins of the newly-formed Archive Producers Alliance (APA).
Afterward, attendees will participate in a discussion moderated by former International Documentary Association (IDA) President Richard Propper, which will include leaders and members representing an amazing cross-section of trade associations from the third-party content community, featuring Segal, Jenkins (APA), 1895 Films Founder Tom Jennings (PGA), Fremantle’s Gordon Craig (FOCAL), All3Media’s Dale Grayson (Int’l Federation of TV Archives), Elizabeth Klinck (Visual Researchers of Canada), and Gregory Fein (Association of Clearance & Research Professionals / CLEAR). Come prepared with opinions as they try to solve it all! Wish them luck!
FootageFest’s special guest this year is world-renowned skydiving stuntman Joe Jennings. The legendary cameraman has produced hundreds of stunts for TV, films, and commercials, and he will be highlighted on a panel featuring Professional and Amateur Sports content. Joining Jennings will be from IMG Media, Catapult (formerly XOS Digital), Archival Ninjas, and Lebron James’ SpringHill Company.
Klinck will also be appearing on a moderating on a British Film Institute-sponsored panel on international government libraries, featuring representatives from the BFI, INA (France), National Film Board of Canada, and Sonuma (Belgium). Viral videos will also be explored with reps from Trusted Media Brands (formerly Jukin), Launchpad Entertainment, Newsflare and America’s Funniest Videos — as well as producers from Ridiculousness and Fast & Loud.
Another one of FootageFest’s special guests will be featured on the News Exposure-sponsored Local News panel: Ukranian emigrant Oliya Scootercaster who runs the New York-based stringer outfit Freedom News TV. After Russia invaded Ukraine, Oliya returned to her homeland to document the war. Also featured will be Chicago’s News Exposure and L.A.’s Key News Network. Nimia’s new brand Kurator will also participate, showcasing the Tegna News Agency (formerly Gannett), as well as a local news producer (KCBS, KNBC, KCAL), and a rep from the library of the University of North Texas.
FootageFest has assembled an amazing line-up of experts to present a case study commemorating the 60th anniversary of the tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy. All of the compelling content will be discussed from those terrible four days in history — from the President and First Lady’s arrival at Love Field in Dallas, to the tragic motorcade footage, to John-John’s heart-wrenching salute to his father, to the fatal shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald on live television. Who reps this content? What are the challenges in using the infamous Zapruder film? Employees from the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza will take you through those four days, with help from acclaimed non-fiction TV producer Tom Jennings and Archive Producer Rich Remsberg (Bobby Kennedy for President). Scene Savors — who has restored a significant amount of the news broadcasts from those four days — will also be in attendance.
Last year it was standing room only for the debut of FootageFest’s “Historical Show & Tell,” so it will gloriously return, featuring samples from Global Image Works, WPA, Periscope Film, British Pathe, and the library of the University of North Texas.
Fox Archives is returning as lead sponsor, offering a rare tour of the Fox studio lot, as well as an amazing end-of-conference rooftop party showcasing their amazing library, as well as offering an out-of-this-world view of the Pacific Ocean. Retro Video will also return as a main sponsor with a Friday night cocktail party, sampling us with drinks and hors d’oeuvres over some of their amazing rock ‘n roll content.
LOLA Clips will also be sponsoring the L.A.-centric “Tacos on the Beach” featuring festival favorites Los Gringos Locos, located directly across from the hotel. Yes, across the street! Returning sponsors also include CNN, British Film Institute, Periscope Film, News Exposure, Footage.net, and 123rf.
