Newly Discovered Punk Rock Photos London 1977-1978

In 1977, American photographer Greg Smith arrived in London and found himself an accidental eyewitness to the explosive punk rock movement taking over the city.

Smith soon became a fixture with his camera at legendary underground haunts like the 100 Club and The Marquee capturing the raw energy and anti-establishment spirit of London’s punk rock bands, including Adam and the Ants, The Slits, Generation X, and Crass.

Smith’s concert photographs and portraits of band members were published in Sounds and New Musical Express magazines. He then started doing shoots for Ritz newspaper, including a portrait session with John Waters.

Smith also photographed artists and filmmakers in London, including Don Letts in his flat and Derek Jarman at his loft and at the premiere of his movie, Jubilee.

After a year in London Smith's visa expired, forcing him to depart the UK. Arriving in New York, he found the American punk scene lacked the same confrontational, politically charged spirit as the London scene.

Dejected, Smith stopped photographing shows and put his nearly 3,500 punk rock negatives and contact sheets into storage until they resurfaced nearly 40 years later.

Global ImageWorks is in the process of onboarding Greg Smith’s London punk rock photos.

FootageFest ’24 has released their list of exciting panels for its three-day soiree this September at the luxurious beach-side Marriott Marina Del Rey!

In its sixth year, FootageFest has become the largest conference for third-party content in the world.

Headlining the panels will be its main event — the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding the controversial use of Artificial Intelligence in today’s film, TV, and online programming. Following a demo from graphic artist extraordinaire Seth Strong (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and legal updates by FF fave and legal eagle Jon Segal (partner, David Wright Tremaine), you’ll hear a guideline proposal from Florentine Films’ Stephanie Jenkins of the newly-formed Archive Producers Alliance (APA).

Afterward, attendees will participate in a discussion moderated by former International Documentary Association (IDA) President Richard Propper, which will include leaders and members representing an amazing cross-section of trade associations from the third-party content community, featuring Segal, Jenkins (APA), 1895 Films Founder Tom Jennings (PGA), Fremantle’s Gordon Craig (FOCAL), All3Media’s Dale Grayson (Int’l Federation of TV Archives), Elizabeth Klinck (Visual Researchers of Canada), and Gregory Fein (Association of Clearance & Research Professionals / CLEAR). Come prepared with opinions as they try to solve it all! Wish them luck!

FootageFest’s special guest this year is world-renowned skydiving stuntman Joe Jennings. The legendary cameraman has produced hundreds of stunts for TV, films, and commercials, and he will be highlighted on a panel featuring Professional and Amateur Sports content. Joining Jennings will be from IMG Media, Catapult (formerly XOS Digital), Archival Ninjas, and Lebron James’ SpringHill Company.

Klinck will also be appearing on a moderating on a British Film Institute-sponsored panel on international government libraries, featuring representatives from the BFI, INA (France), National Film Board of Canada, and Sonuma (Belgium). Viral videos will also be explored with reps from Trusted Media Brands (formerly Jukin), Launchpad Entertainment, Newsflare and America’s Funniest Videos — as well as producers from Ridiculousness and Fast & Loud

Another one of FootageFest’s special guests will be featured on the News Exposure-sponsored Local News panel: Ukranian emigrant Oliya Scootercaster who runs the New York-based stringer outfit Freedom News TV. After Russia invaded Ukraine, Oliya returned to her homeland to document the war. Also featured will be Chicago’s News Exposure and L.A.’s Key News Network. Nimia’s new brand Kurator will also participate, showcasing the Tegna News Agency (formerly Gannett), as well as a local news producer (KCBS, KNBC, KCAL), and a rep from the library of the University of North Texas.

FootageFest has assembled an amazing line-up of experts to present a case study commemorating the 60th anniversary of the tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy. All of the compelling content will be discussed from those terrible four days in history — from the President and First Lady’s arrival at Love Field in Dallas, to the tragic motorcade footage, to John-John’s heart-wrenching salute to his father, to the fatal shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald on live television. Who reps this content? What are the challenges in using the infamous Zapruder film? Employees from the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza will take you through those four days, with help from acclaimed non-fiction TV producer Tom Jennings and Archive Producer Rich Remsberg (Bobby Kennedy for President). Scene Savors — who has restored a significant amount of the news broadcasts from those four days — will also be in attendance.

Last year it was standing room only for the debut of FootageFest’s “Historical Show & Tell,” so it will gloriously return, featuring samples from Global Image Works, WPA, Periscope Film, British Pathe, and the library of the University of North Texas.

Fox Archives is returning as lead sponsor, offering a rare tour of the Fox studio lot, as well as an amazing end-of-conference rooftop party showcasing their amazing library, as well as offering an out-of-this-world view of the Pacific Ocean. Retro Video will also return as a main sponsor with a Friday night cocktail party, sampling us with drinks and hors d’oeuvres over some of their amazing rock ‘n roll content.

LOLA Clips will also be sponsoring the L.A.-centric “Tacos on the Beach” featuring festival favorites Los Gringos Locos, located directly across from the hotel. Yes, across the street! Returning sponsors also include CNN, British Film Institute, Periscope Film, News Exposure, Footage.net, and 123rf.

Over 50 archives from all over the world have rented booths for this year’s festivities, making this FootageFest’s largest conference ever. As of this writing, there are still a few booths available. Vendors wanting to rent booth space, and potential attendees looking for tickets, please go to www.footagefest.com.

Never-before-seen footage to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris.

INA is excited to present newly uncovered footage of the Liberation of Paris, filmed in the heart of the city during the final hours of the Occupation as news of the Liberation spread. The film offers an up-close view of General Leclerc’s armored division entering the capital, a jubilant crowd celebrating the return of peace, and spontaneous scenes of joy captured from the terrace of the Café de la Paix.

The story behind this new collection of archives is deeply moving: during the lockdown, Maxime Lesur discovered film reels from 1944 in his attic, which he had found while clearing out his father's house and had never looked at until then. He found the stunning footage shot by his grandfather during the Liberation and decided to share it with INA, hoping it would help illuminate this pivotal moment in history.

All new footage of the mythical seascapes of the Pacific, including New Zealand.

NHNZ Worldwide has recently added all new 4K clips of the ancient islands marooned in the huge expanse of the South Pacific ocean known as the Cook Islands or Kūki 'Airani, which include Rarotonga, Tukutea and Aitutaki islands. The Cook Islands are scattered across two million square kilometres, but every year they attract over 3000 humpback whales in one of the longest migrations on the planet. As our footage graphically shows, the whales are driven by the need to socialize, mate and reproduce, and these warm tropical waters are the perfect nursery for the females to give birth and raise their young.

Rarotonga is surrounded by a shallow tidal lagoon, protected from the open sea by a massive coral reef. Green turtles regularly seek out the passageways into the lagoon when they need a rest. On the northern side of the island, the Mushroom Forest is like something out of a fairytale. Its mythical, coral landscape is maintained by coral-munching parrotfish and algae-pruning surgeonfish. All of these species are featured in our amazing archive.

In the skies above, red-tailed tropicbirds court their mates on the wing, revealing astonishing aerial antics. Eventually, they raise their chicks on the island of Takutea, a haven for birds, but to feed their families they have to avoid ‘pirates’, or Great Frigatebirds which live a life of 'crime', stealing their food from others.

Aitutaki is one of the world’s most beautiful lagoons. It looks like a picture-perfect paradise but, like all the islands in the South Pacific cyclone belt, it’s vulnerable to an approaching storm. We have managed to capture a tribe of land-loving fish known as blennies. These astonishing fish are in the process of leaving the sea to become landlubbers.

We have also added to our extensive Aotearoa New Zealand collection with footage of the magical seascapes of the Tikapa Moana o Hauraki/The Hauraki Gulf, which lies on the doorstep of New Zealand’s largest city, Tamaki Makaurau Auckland. Seventy islands are scattered through the blue expanse and every summer millions of aquatic visitors from the tropics converge here, all lured by a unique seasonal smorgasbord.

The South Pacific gyre current rotates warm sea water, like a conveyor belt, all the way from the equator down into the north of New Zealand. It transports clouds of nutrients and draws a multitude of creatures into the gulf as they follow this trail, including the rarely-filmed giant oceanic manta rays, common dolphins and Bryde’s whales.

We have footage of a troop of rare false killer whales showing up to seek their share of the gyre’s abundant bounty. Unlike their namesakes, these dolphins don’t hunt other marine mammals, instead they form attachments to them!

And don’t forget our recent additions of New Zealand’s unique animals and

Lord Of The Rings-style mystical landscapes, highlighted in our previous summer newsletter, adding to our 15,000+ hours of specialist footage and 50,000+ online clips, shot around the globe.

Our site continues to grow its natural history content offering, so check out these new collections at footage.nhnz.tv, or contact our team directly by email at images@nhnz.tv. Our renowned, personalized service is offered by our experienced team of researchers and content specialists, led by senior archivist Jamie Thorp.

Reelin’ In The Years Productions signs an exclusive representation deal with two major audio interview archives spanning nearly 60 years.

Reelin’ In The Years Productions, the premier source for footage of musical artists, entertainers, and history makers is proud to announce it has signed a deal to exclusively represent the rights to thousands of audio interviews contained within two prestigious archives, Rockline and Rock’s Backpages.

ROCKLINE

Rockline, a nationally syndicated live radio interview program that aired from 1981–2014, featured interviews with rock & roll’s leading artists. The archive contains over 2,200 episodes and nearly 3,000 guests. Rockline’s unique format allowed the listeners to call in live and ask questions which was an invaluable tool to connect fans with their Rock & Roll heroes. The host, Bob Coburn, was dubbed The Godfather of Rock & Roll due to his unrivaled knowledge of music. Because of his knowledge, and the respect that the artists gave him, Rockline became an important and influential program, which was awarded Billboard Magazine’s “Best Syndicated Show” over 10 times.

Paul McCartney on Rockline

Rockline featured a wide array of talent including such iconic artists as Bob Dylan, Guns & Roses, U2, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Aerosmith, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Cheap Trick, Allman Brothers, Heart, Rush, Van Halen, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul McCartney, Green Day, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Pat Benatar, & Soundgarden.

Mick Jagger and Bob Coburn on Rockline

When Lynette Bishop Coburn, Managing Director for Rockline was asked to elaborate on the archive and why she chose Reelin’ in the Years Productions to represent this library, she replied “Bob Coburn’s interviews on Rockline are an essential part of rock music history. We are thrilled to collaborate with Reelin’ in the Years Productions. David Peck and his team are renowned for their extensive archives of music and entertainment footage. This collaboration will ensure that Rockline’s invaluable interviews with iconic music artists are preserved and shared allowing their legendary voices to be heard for generations to come through documentaries, television programs, streaming services and other media platforms.”

ROCK’S BACKPAGES

The Rock’s Backpages audio archive contains thousands of in-depth audio interviews conducted by legendary music journalists from the 1960s–today. These unique recordings were never intended to be heard by the public at large and were usually recorded on a portable device such as a cassette recorder. As these interviews were not conducted for broadcast media, the artists were far less guarded and offered candid reflections and personal insights, whereas in interviews for public consumption, they might be less forthcoming.

Elton John and Bob Coburn on Rockline

One of the many unique aspects to this archive is that it not only contains interviews with music’s biggest artists of the last 60 years, but there are many interviews with important non-performers such as songwriters, producers, engineers, record company executives, managers, rock photographers and other significant figures in the world of music.

Some of the thousands of audio recordings contained within this library include interviews with artists that sadly are no longer with us such as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols), David Crosby, Keith Moon (The Who), James Brown, Freddie Mercury (Queen), Little Richard, Tom Petty, Marvin Gaye, Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Johnny Cash, George Michael, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Joey Ramone (Ramones), Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac), Joe Strummer (Clash), Sinead O'Connor, Maurice & Robin Gibb (Bee Gees), Donna Summer, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Luther Vandross, Frank Zappa, Mike Nesmith (Monkees), Merle Haggard, Walter Becker (Steely Dan), and Marc Bolan.

Axl Rose on Rockline

Speaking on their new business relationship, Jasper Bowie, Marketing & Communications Manager for Rock’s Backpages, commented, "We see in David Peck someone who shares our values in terms of archiving high quality, unique material from the annals of music history, so it's great to be able to work with him and Reelin' In The Years Productions to make our trove of exclusive audio available to more filmmakers and projects.”

David Peck, President Of Reelin’ In The Years Productions observed, “While we’ve been a leader in licensing music footage, in recent years, the value that audio interviews have brought to the documentary filmmaking community has been invaluable. Many productions have relied heavily on audio interviews to tell a deeper story in their films while using other imagery such as still images and stock footage to drive the narrative. Being able to offer the interviews from the Rockline & Rock’s Backpages archive will be a huge asset to the documentary filmmaking community.”

Ozzy Osbourne and Bob Coburn on Rockline

Reelin’ In The Years Productions (winner of FOCAL’s 2020 “Footage Library of The Year Award”) is the premier source for footage of musical artists, entertainers, and history makers. Their unique archive houses over 30,000 hours of music footage spanning 100 years (which also includes interview and B-roll.) In addition to their one-of-a-kind music footage archive, they also have available for licensing 10,000 hours of in-depth interviews with the 20th century’s icons of Film and Television, Politics, Comedy, Literature, Art, Science, Fashion, and Sports. The interviews, filmed between 1952–2024, are from smaller interview based archives and also legendary talk shows around the world, including those hosted by Sir David Frost, Merv Griffin, Mike Wallace, Dennis Miller, Sir Michael Parkinson, Rick Dees, and Brian Linehan.

Bridgeman Images is delighted to announce their latest footage partnership with UK-based Stewkley Film Archive, a fascinating collection, spanning decades, of amateur films and home movies shot by a number of local cinematographers.

Stewkley Film Archive holds digitized films from Buckinghamshire, in the county town of Aylesbury, the village of Stewkley and other locations. The earliest material, from Aylesbury, dates back to 1936 and includes celebrations for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The village material includes over 40 years of annual May Day celebrations at Stewkley School, and extensive coverage from local filmmakers and others of the village’s battle to avoid being bulldozed to make way for a brand new London Airport. FootageFest 2024 Set for September in Marina Del Rey

While it seems like it was just yesterday that we were all congregating at the fabulous El Portal Theatre complex in North Hollywood, FootageFest ’24 is now only seven months away. And after just three years of live conferences, FootageFest has become the fastest-growing conference in the footage industry, and, as a result of their growing attendance numbers, will be moving their home base to the spectacular Marriott Hotel in Marina Del Rey, providing more time and more room to network, and fewer distractions as attendees can stay at the conference location. We’re talking 24-hour networking!

FootageFest will take place over three days, beginning on Thursday, September 26th and concluding on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, with the Marketplace and symposiums taking place over two days on September 27th and 28th.

This year Fox Archives will return as FootageFest’s leading sponsor.  As a result of the much-talked-about unique backlot tours FootageFest has offered international delegates in the past, FootageFest ’24 will kick off with a special “Fox Thursday,” offering more attendees unparalleled access to Fox’s amazing lot.  In addition to a private tour -- which is not available to the public – delegates will be privy to special historical presentations about the studio’s amazing history, as well as Fox Archives’ ongoing efforts to rescue content from their news affiliates and make it available to our industry.

This year FootageFest will offer two full days of exhibitor time, with no competing panels, meaning attendees will not have to choose between the amazing panels, guests and presentations they want to attend.

Here a few of the panels they’ll be presenting at FootageFest 2024:

  • Artificial Intelligence...Where Are We Now?:  A look at the recent developments – both exciting and yet frightening!

  • The Life and Death of TV Variety: featuring legendary Laugh-in creator George Schlatter.

  • The History of Viral Videos: From the days of tape-trading to digital agencies – how this VHS-dubbing hobby morphed into a billion-dollar business.

  • FootageFest will also be debuting workshops, our first featuring online guru, Greg Fein.

  • And the return of…Rich Remsberg’s ‘Historical Show & Tell.’

All of this within a stone’s throw of Mother’s Beach at the Marina, where FootageFest will host their beach party, as well as a rooftop party with an amazing view of the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Make sure to take advantage of their early-bird rate for attendees, as well as exhibitors. Remember, each conference has sold out of exhibitor space, and although they’ll have a larger space this year – don’t be left out of this amazing event.

Black Pioneers in Hollywood: Five Decades at Producers Library

Lena horne

Producers Library celebrates Black History Month by showcasing in footage and photos, Pioneering Black performers of early Hollywood.

As for many white actors of the era, Vaudeville proved to be a springboard to the silver screen for Black actors like Bert Williams, Lincoln Perry, better known by his stage name Stepin Fetchit, and Clarence Muse.

Prolific director Oscar Micheaux cast actor Paul Robeson in his first role in 1925. Robeson would go on to appear in films into the 1940s before he fell prey to blacklisting during the McCarthy era. Robeson mentored future star Harry Belafonte, also a successful recording artist in the 1950s, who introduced the world to Calypso music. Belafonte’s co-star in the 1954 Carmen Jones, Dorothy Dandridge, would become the first African-American woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Fifteen years earlier, Hattie McDaniel was not only nominated but won an Oscar for her supporting role in Gone with the Wind

Lena Horne’s successful career on stage and screen prevailed over 70 years. Any conversation about the Black pioneers of cinema would be remiss without mentioning Sidney Poitier. He played a large part in expanding the image of who an African American is and what he can be on screen since his first role as a doctor in 1950. The following decade, Poitier would become the first Black man to win an Oscar for Best Actor and continued his long, iconic cinematic career as actor and filmmaker.

Footage of these African American screen pioneers can be viewed here.

Reelin' In The Years Productions Now Representing "Into the Night With Rick Dees"

Reelin’ In The Years Productions, the world’s premier source for footage of musical artists, entertainers & history makers, is proud to announce the exclusive representation of the talk show, “Into The Night With Rick Dees.”

Rick dees

The program, produced and hosted by the renowned radio personality Rick Dees, aired from June 1990 thru October 1991 and featured 800 different guests from the field of music, sports and entertainment.

“Into The Night With Rick Dees” was broadcasted on the ABC Television Network opposite The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Late Night With David Letterman & The Arsenio Hall Show.

The numerous accomplishments of Rick Dees started in 1976 when he wrote and recorded DISCO DUCK, the award-winning #1 hit that sold more than six million copies. In 1981, Rick became a major figure in broadcasting when he began hosting the top-rated morning radio show in Los Angeles on KIIS-FM. In a short time, he turned KIIS-FM into the number one revenue generating radio station in America. In 1983 Rick started his internationally syndicated radio show, The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40, which has since been heard by millions of people around the world. Rick Dees garnered many accolades including being named Billboard Radio Personality Of The Year ten years in a row, induction into the National Radio Hall Of Fame, a People’s Choice award and his induction into the National Association Of Broadcasters’ Hall Of Fame.

The original 1 Inch broadcast tapes for “Into The Night With Rick Dees” had been sitting untouched in Rick’s storage facility for over 30 years and they required and lot of work by the team at Reelin’ In The Years Productions to digitally transfer all 300 shows and then fully catalog them.

The show featured many unique interviews which was due in large part to Rick’s relaxed style with his guests where his knowledge and all around personality made them feel comfortable.

Rick Dees interviews Flava Flav and chuck D of Public Enemy.

In addition to many leading film and television actors and actresses of the day, Rick Dees also presented a wide array of musical talent who not only performed live, but were also interviewed. Some of the many highlights that were discovered in this archive include Rap/Hip Hop artists such as 2 Live Crew, Public Enemy, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, MC Trouble as well as legendary artists which include Stevie Wonder, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, James Brown, Dolly Parton, Little Richard & Natalie Cole. One of the unique moments from this archive is a performance of an obscure group called Lock Up featuring an unknown Tom Morello on guitar who two years later would go on to form the iconic and influential band, Rage Against the Machine. Another surprising moment Reelin’ In The Years Productions discovered while fully cataloging the series, was an appearance by the (later to be) guitar legend Joe Bonamassa when he was only 13!

“I am so excited to be in business with David Peck & Reelin’ In The Years Productions” said Rick Dees. “They are the gold standard of footage archives and I’m appreciative of their intense work they put into fully restoring my archive of the one of a kind interviews I conducted, along with the world class performers I had as my guests.”

“It’s an honor to add ‘Into The Night With Rick Dees’ to our vast archive of legendary talk shows and to be able to make the footage available to the filmmaking community,” said David Peck, president of Reelin’ In The Years Productions. “Further, I’d like to thank Rick Dees for trusting us with this important archive and I look forward to working with him for many years come.”

All 300 episodes of this award winning show are fully digitized, catalogued and are now, for the first time, available for licensing to all forms of media.

Reelin’ In The Years Productions, (winner of FOCAL’s 2020 “Footage Library of The Year Award”) is the premier source for footage of musical artists, entertainers and history makers. The interviews are from legendary talk shows around the world, including those hosted by Sir David Frost, Merv Griffin, Mike Wallace, Brian Linehan and most recently Michael Parkinson & Rick Dees.

David Peck (founder & president of Reelin’ In The Years) has directed and produced over 70 historical music documentaries and programs focused primarily on the giants of jazz, blues and rock & roll garnering many awards including a Grammy Nomination. In 2020, David Peck was one of the Executive Producers on the critically acclaimed documentary on the Bee Gees , “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” and is currently serving as one of the Co-Executive Producers on a multi-part documentary series on the famed Memphis record label, entitled “STAX: Soulsville USA” and a powerful documentary on the legendary artist  Billy Preston, “That’s The Way God Planned It.” Both films will premiere at South By Southwest (SXSW) in March 2024.

Managed and developed by Historic Films' Anthea Carr and Adam Putter and his team at Bad Math in Toronto, the design and usability input was considered from both Historic’s internal research staff and longtime clients. They hope the entire stock footage research community will find the new site streamlined, technically more efficient and visually more appealing. Check out all that is new at historicfilms.com
